Why travel to the UK

It may seem strange, but as much as I enjoy traveling to the UK with my students, it is often tough to recruit them. Since I teach British literature, I like to include Britain in every trip, because it is relevant to the classroom. However, I have a lot more trouble getting kids to go to the UK than I have getting kids to go to, say, Italy or France. They seem to have the impression that the UK is not exotic enough for them, or maybe it is the fact that they speak English in the UK. However, what is always amusing is that the kids rarely speak Italian or French, so they are going to generally resort to English anyway!

I really love the UK and the kids who do travel to the UK with me tend to want to go back on another trip. Once they have been there, they understand what the draw is. So what is the draw? Why travel to the UK?

For starters, the UK is four countries that each offer something special. Although only Northern Ireland technically counts as the UK, let us include all of Ireland for the sake of this article. Ireland is beautiful. The natural environment is breathtaking, and the people are some of the friendliest in the world. It is a relaxing country, and it may, at times, get a bit boring for student groups, but it tends to also attract students. Many of them consider Ireland closer to France and Italy for exotic travel destinations than they do England, for example.

Wales is also beautiful. I have only been to the northern parts of the country, but the countryside looks a lot like the Irish countryside, yet it is unique as well. Another element of Wales I liked a lot was the castles! Clearly, there are castles all over the UK, but they are so different from the castles in other parts of Europe. There are many medieval ruined castles, and anyone who likes ghosts and haunted travel places will love the number of castles in the UK that definitely make you believe in ghosts!

Canterbury Cathedral in England. This is where Thomas Becket was killed.

I have never been to Scotland, much to my husband's chagrin. However, there is a lot to attract travelers in Scotland, such as the Highlands, Loch Ness, and the history of William Wallace. If you are a golfer, Scotland is also the place to be for golf!

And then we come to England. There is so much in England and there is definitely something for everyone. Do you like sports? Well some of the world's best teams for soccer (or football) are in England. There is great golfing, famous tennis locales, rugby, cricket, etc. Are you a history buff? You can't do much better than the UK for history, unless you travel to Rome or Greece. Between the castles, the cathedrals, the palaces, and the homes of writers, England has something for every fan of history. And you can do it all within a few hours' drive! You can visit the Tower of London and the Roman Wall in one Tube stop! Talk about knocking two major historical sites off the list at once.

White Cliffs of Dover

England also has some visual highlights such as Stonehenge, St. Michael's Mount, and the White Cliffs of Dover. When I first saw the White Cliffs, I got chills! They are truly as impressive as everyone has said.

Ideal London Hotels near Hyde Park and Oxford Street

London has always been one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations and one of the main reasons for this is due to the fact that this sprawling metropolis has so much to offer; numerous famous sights and landmarks, world-class museums and galleries, great shopping, an excellent nightlife, and it is also home to a vast range range of events, concerts and exhibitions.

Thanks to the weakening of the country's currency (£/pound) over the last few months, the city has become even more appealing to tourists, especially from the US and the Eurozone. Once one of the most expensive cities in the world, London has become that little bit more accessible thanks to both the fall in sterling and the recession. Not only has accommodation become proportionally cheaper, but also eating out and shopping, as restaurateurs and retailers jostle to attract customers during the well-reported credit crunch.
